Trainer
Some of the best pictures I think I’ve ever taken are of people in their own environment. Whether it’s an athlete in their element, a musician performing for the crowd, a trainer in the gym, or even a newborn that’s only a couple of days old snuggling up in some blankets. These types of images are powerful.
These types of images aren’t terribly hard to create. Click on through to learn a couple of my tips and tricks on creating these fascinating images.
Natural light can be a beautiful thing when taking environment portraits, but I think an off-camera flash can really make these images amazing. A strobe can accentuate features that you wouldn’t have been able to otherwise. If you can master artificial light, you photography will improve significantly.

Soccer
When I first started out, finding a subject was one of the most difficult aspects of this. My problem was that I was overthinking it, and you may be overthinking it, too. I found that my own network of people was the best solution to finding a subject. Update your Facebook status with an idea for a shoot that you need people for, and you’ll be surprised with who responds.
If I’m not going for more of a model-like look to the image, I won’t do much posing. The main reason for this is that if you’re shooting someone who may not be comfortable in front of a camera, barking at them to turn their head slightly to the right, not that far, a little more my way, no not like that, will intimidate them, make them feel more self-conscious and will kill the mood of the image.
I think this has to be the number one aspect you should focus on when shooting these types of images. Help your subject to feel comfortable enough in front of the camera, so that they forget it’s there. That’s when the magic happens.
Hockey
A prop or two could add an element to an image that will take it from great to amazing. Whether you add in a bag for a boxer or textbooks for a student, you’ll create an image that will fully capture the environment of your subject. It’s a good deal of fun, too.
Boxer
Environmental portraiture is a great way to learn photography. You’ll be: dealing with off-camera lighting, learning to work with “models”, and improving your composition skills. Taking these images can be a great ego boost as well because you can make beautiful pictures without too much work and planning. It’s a good investment of time and effort because having these images in your portfolio will show potential customers the breadth of your photographic skills. These types of images can also help you break into the commercial photography arena.

Once again I’ve scoured the Internet looking for informative, instructive, and inspiring photography articles to share. There are some excellent ones in this list for your reading pleasure.

I just received a note from B&H saying that the Canon EOS 5D Mark II body is available right now for $1999.95. The 5D2 (as I prefer to call it – less typing!) is Canon’s 21 MP full frame DSLR that also can produce excellent HD video. This is the camera that I use for my own photography.
The body-only deal is a great opportunity for those who are looking to upgrade from another body and may already have a set of Canon lenses. If you don’t have lenses, two great ones to combine with this camera are the Canon Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto EF 24-70mm f/2.8L or the Canon 24-105mm f/4L IS USM. (I hace the latter, though I know others who love the 24-70, and it is eligible for the current Canon ‘Instant Rebate’ Promotion on lenses and Speedlites.
I knew it. Nik SO gets the iPad experience that it’s no surprise that Apple named Nik Software’s photo editing App Snapseed their “iPad App of the Year.” I looked back in my email to this summer, and dug up an email I sent to a friend who works for Nik when he asked if I had tried out the Beta of Snapseed. Here’s what I wrote to him back then:
“It feels like this is what Apple was hoping somebody would finally do in an App for the iPad. You leveraged the things that make the iPad great, and combined it with the creative power that makes Nik [Software] plug-ins so great. I would tell you I’m impressed, but that doesn’t go nearly far enough for what you have guys have managed to pull off.”

The usefulness of many photography books decreases rapidly when they are tied to technology or software, such as to the latest camera models or Photoshop version. By contrast, photography books that teach basic principles can retain their value for many, many years. The international bestseller Light: Science and Magic is just such a book. The fourth edition continues to live up to the high standard set by its earlier editions. (See my review of the third edition here for more detail about this book.)
How can you feel truly comfortable in your understanding of a subject if you do not understand the elemental concepts first? Photographers should know the fundamental, immutable truths about light and how it interacts with the rest of the physical world. I have no doubt that you can be successful at photography without fully comprehending the laws and nature of light, but how much better you would be if you had a grasp of the basics. That is what this book teaches, and it is why it belongs in your library if you are at all serious about the art and craft of photography.
For those of you who already have the third edition and are wondering if it is worth the cost to purchase the fourth, I’d say no. Though the latest edition is updated and expanded, in my opinion, it is not a big enough improvement to justify the cost. On the other hand, if you do not have the third edition, then by all means you owe it to yourself to get a copy of the book considered to be the gold standard in lighting.

German videographer Michael König has compiled a breathtaking HD video from footage shot from the International Space Station. The original video clips, that König has processed and set to music, were created from a series of time-lapse stills of the Earth at night and include footage of Aurora Borealis and Australis. Viewing the original still images on NASA's 'The Gateway to Astronaut Photography of Earth' website reveals they were shot with a Nikon D3S with 17-35mm F2.8 and 14-24mm F2.8 lenses (via Daily Mail).
